To add categories (i.e. from the blog or portfolio), please open the “Screen Options” panel to the top right of the page in WordPress admin -> Appearance -> Menus. Then check all available checkboxes to add all categories and post types to the boxes on the left side of the menu page. After this step, you can close this panel again. Now open the boxes on the left side of the page and add the categories of your choice to the menu. Don’t forget to press the “Save Menu” button after you’ve added all your categories to the WordPress menu.
